Biography
Momoko Seko is a performer, composer and educator expanding musical vocabulary on the French horn by drawing stylistic and conceptual principles as well as repertoire from world folk and contemporary genres. Known for interdisciplinary collaborations and intimate shows, Momo’s independent programming has been described as inventive, irreverent, and inimitable.
She also performs in chamber and large ensembles: classical/contemporary groups such as Ensemble Dal Niente, the Grossman Ensemble, Grand Rapids Symphony, Omaha Symphony, Joffrey Ballet, Rockford Symphony Orchestra, Oistrakh, 3rd Coast Brass, and Music of the Baroque, as well as recording/performing with jazz big bands and nonclassical groups such as The Shins, Ensemble Mik Nawooj, the Braeburn Brass quintet, and French horn and guitar duo Momo and Alvin.
In 2024, the duo released a co-composed album titled “Among Other Things” — Momo’s compositional debut.
Momo teaches a studio of private students at Chicagoland high schools, while reaching collegiate and professional musicians through curriculum she developed with her duo Momo and Alvin. She has presented at Texas State University, Bowling Green State University, Tennessee Tech University, UW Wisconsin-Whitewater, and Northeastern Illinois University, and Elmhurst university, where she also led masterclasses, recitals, and guest talks.
Momo enjoys growing and foraging culinary mushrooms. She is the 2023 winds fellow of the Chicago Luminarts Foundation. An Evanston native, her teachers include Gail Williams, Jon Boen, Oto Carrillo, Neil Kimmel, Cliff Colnot and Victor Yampolski.
